And yet another of my naïve purchases .... When I first started collecting in 2013 I wanted to represent a layout starting around 1958 - really to coincide with late BR logo - but I noticed all of these super mineral wagons, from 5 to 9 plank, for sale with all kinds of lovely names on the side. What I did not realise is that by 1958 these had all been repainted either bauxite or grey. So what to do? Living in France it was difficult to resell the wagons so I started on a conversion project. I wanted the wagons to look "well" aged to new. So I decided on using the technique to remove the top layer of paint to reveal another coat hidden. I have tried several methods but this was the first using vallejo chipping medium and I have to say it works quite well - see what you think..... 1. I separated the chassis' 2. Applied a primer to bodies 3. Individually painted the planks different shades of wood 4. Sealed the wagons with matt varnish 5. Applied a coat of vallejo chipping by airbrush (thinned) 6. Painted the wagons with bauxite (airbrush) 7. Water added to selected wagons and the top coat pealed off to reveal the planks 8. Weathered the chassis by airbrush and powders and then re-attached the chassis' 9. Weathered certain wagons with washes 10. Decals applied 11. Coat of matt varnish to seal 12. Coal loads and weights added to each wagon
