Hi Folks. Thought some of you might be interested in my day today. I was lucky enough to be invited for a whirl on the new hydrogen powered train, as part some voluntary work I do with an Edinburgh youth charity. It is a class 799, which is essentially a repurposed class 319 EMU. One of the coaches has been fitted with hydrogen storage tanks and a hydrogen fuel cell. Long story short, the hydrogen passes through the fuel cell, combining with oxygen from the atmosphere, to give electricity to power the train, and releasing water as a by product! Pretty tired after shepherding 25 youths from Edinburgh to Glasgow and back again, but a very worthwhile day!
