#postit #engine #powerplant One of my last consultancy commissions before retiring was to prepare a pollution potential review (IMO do things somewhat differently from land based organisations) for the Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C diesel engines being installed in the 5 largest ships to date. The ships are / will be powered by a Wartsila Sulzer RTA96-C 14-cylinder diesel engine, the largest single diesel unit in the world. The 2,300t engine delivers a maximum power of 108,920hp at 102rpm and a maximum torque of 5,608,312lb/ft at 102rpm. Just think about the mass of metal thundering around at 102 RPM! These are a couple of photos taken during the build, now released to the web. BTW, they are a lot cleaner than marine diesels used to be and will meet IMO proposals. These could even be the same engines reference in @gerald_ashforth 's post
