#stationdetails #realstations #postit This time it's turn of the Midland Railway. Ilkeston Town station, opened 1847, closed 1870. Reopened 1879 and closed 1950. Trains ran from here to Ilkeston Junction station, a short trip down the branch. Again all gone, first a bus depot for Midland General Omnibus company and latterly by Tesco. Directly across the road was the Rutland Hotel, which was built hoping to capture passengers arriving in Ilkeston who came to "partake of the waters", Ilkeston originally being a Spa town, but shortly after opening, mining subsidence caused the mines to flood and the waters never returned and the station died a slow death.
