#tardistuesday I'd like to go back to 1896 when Richard Broadbent opened the Groudle Glen narrow gauge railway on the Isle of Man. Known as the "line that runs uphill to the sea" it took tourists through the glen to his cliff-edge 'zoo' to see the polar bears and sea lions. Apparently the original engine (Sea Lion) did up to 40 runs a day before they bought a second one (Polar Bear) to share the duties. These days it's been restored and runs with original and replica engines but I'd love to transport myself to its opening day and see what the Victorian tourists thought of the line, the scenery and the spectacle of polar bears on the cliff side! Photos from one of our favourite books!
