I have experimented with impregnating sculptamold with grit and moulding to shape on the layout. It is possible to use coloured water in the sculptamold to give a base colour. Careful on scale size. i.e. in yorkshire they can be 5ft tall and up to3ft at the base. Just another alternative to ponder.
