Carriage figures. 100 painted in 6 hours Just to share a project proving not everything has to be expensive. I have bought every type of figure pack from airfix to dapol to preiser and bachmann and of course hornby. I prefer to have the majority of my carriages with figures and lights. The one advantage of light is that it highlights better the figures in the carriages. But at the price of preiser or bachmann this is just too expensive, especially with a fleet of 200 carriages. So on a famous internet site one can buy figures for as little as £3.50 for 100 seated, already painted. But, in as much as being in a carriage hides a lot of the figure it still shows up the imprecision with which these figures are painted. So I repaint them. What I have found is the base way to paint these figures is as a production line. I use two floral blocks (oasis) and cocktail sticks with blue tack as the method of securing the figures. I then sort the figures into the same style (in most of these 100 packs you get 7 or 8 styles but buying 4 lots at a time means you can get as many as 50 of the same type). I load the figures then spray a primer (car paint primer does the job and is cheap) I then start painting always doing clothing first to ensure speed of application. I then finish with skin and hair. I never paint shoes because one invariably cuts of the bottom of the legs. Fixing the figure in the seated position means the underpart is not painted but this is never seen since it is stuck to the seat. It has to be expected that the moulding on these figures is terrible but with good application of paint and knowing that these figures are background scenery means one can do a good job for little money. Given that there are 7 or 8 types and one can vary the paint on the production line means that a carriage with 7-10 people never ends up the same. One other thing is to buy 1/100 scale for 00 gauge. The true scale just does not work in any make of carriage I have bought so I have moved to this size and you can get 2 side by side in most makes. Hope this helps
