Modellers Inspiration No. 92 Street lighting. Urban areas have a variety of public lighting to aid nocturnal visibility & provide an improved level of security. More rural locations are less likely to have these. Lampposts are the most common feature & looking around you will see lots different types. Some are made of metal, some of cast iron & others constructed of concrete. Some are more of a traditional design although even these offer variety. Single lamp heads, doubles & even triple heads can be seen. More recently you will notice in certain areas a night sensor is attached to the light head that will ensure the lamp will illuminate at dusk. With advances in technology, the new ‘part night lights’ will turn off over the early hours of the morning. In addition, a transition to LED lighting which is more energy efficient sees the replacement of lanterns on existing lampposts where practicable. More classic ‘Victorian’ lamp posts can still be seen in tourist ‘hot spots’ such as Canterbury, Edinburgh & Stratford Upon Avon etc but have been updated to modern standards. All these lampposts can be seen at roadside locations, harbours, car parks & on railway platforms too. Modellers can of course include lampposts on their layouts as products are readily available from a number of suppliers including DCC Concepts, Gaugemaster, Kytes Lights, & Woodland scenics. Scale Model Scenery can also provide some lighting options too with the TrainSave TSV204 modern street lights & likes of their AX089-OO mobile lighting tower. Providing lighting to your model railway will certainly add another dimension & I for one, would strongly recommend it.
