Modellers Inspiration No. 93 Electricity Pylons. Also known as ‘electricity transmission and distribution towers’ are the structural supports that carry the UK’s network of high-voltage overhead power lines. These have been a regular piece of UK infrastructure for nearly 100 years with a life expectancy of around 80. Today, there are more than 90,000 pylons across Britain that are used to support high-voltage overhead lines. These cables transmit electricity all over the country through the electricity grid. The pylons keep these cables high enough from the ground that they can easily pass over roads, rivers, valleys or railway lines without coming into contact with vehicles or people. Overhead power lines are attached to the pylons using ‘insulators’ made of materials that won’t conduct an electrical current – such as porcelain or glass. These prevent the steel towers from becoming live. It is also interesting to note that pylons can vary in height & size as well style. A rarely modelled piece of infrastructure that can be seen all over the Country.
