#following a recent discussion about modelling the sea in a harbour, I produced the following diorama, using s small piece of spare ply board and acrylics, topped off with a coating of yacht varnish. The photographs show the plain board, primed with Halfords grey acrylic primer, hand painted and stippled to provide contours for waves using a mix of green and brown acrylics, £3 for a 200ml tube from The Works, then highlighted with white acrylic almost dry-brushed on to the tips of some waves after the main colour had dried to suggest "white horses" and followed by the coating of it all in yacht varnish. For use on a layout, I would suggest two coats of yacht varnish, and I use yacht varnish because it will flex a little and is therefore less prone to cracking than ordinary varnish. This technique is so simple that an older child or even a young teenager could use it successfully, the only caution being, and I am thinking of my own youth, that anything that might be damaged with any splashes of paint or varnish be covered over first.
