Modellers Inspiration No. 103. PCA Tank wagons The conveyance of cement products by rail has been common place for decades. Palletised bags of cement is transported in vans such as VEA, VDA & even Cargowaggons. However, the use of tank wagons such as the PCA has been used for over 4 decades replacing the Presflo wagons in the late 1980’s. The tankers evolved from a traditional barrel, to a variant with an inverted ‘V’ at the top of the tank. As an aside, their contents of powder within the wagons would be extracted either by pressure discharge or by gravity at various terminals across the Country. Companies such as Blue Circle, Castle cement & Rugby cement were/are regular conveyors of cement. Even today, you can see rakes of PCA tank wagons being loaded/unloaded as the South Eastern class 395 service approaches Kings Cross/St. Pancras. Over the years, models have been provided by Bachmann, Hornby, Lima & more recently Accurascale. A rake of these will certainly make an impressive sight.
