Modeller’s Inspiration No. 121. JNA (NLU) wagons These were manufactured & supplied to Network Rail in 2004 & named ‘Falcons’. The NLU designation refers to Network Rail’s ‘National Logistics Unit’. These 42.9m3 open wagons were produced in Romania & designed specifically for the transportation of spoil/ballast from rail renewal sites. These are large wagons measuring 16.9m long & weighing 26.5T capable of a payload of 63.5T. These are similar to the EWS-operated MOA wagons that arrived in 2003. The most obvious difference is the provision of a large, re-inforced door in the centre bay (to facilitate inspection and cleaning out). Unlike the MOAs, the wagons were mounted on 2m wheelbase NACO-designed Axle Motion III bogies, at 12m centres. Unloading of the wagon is typically carried out by mechanical excavators. For modellers looking to recreate these on their layouts, Dapol have produced these in both 00 (B855 & 4F-010-) & N gauge (2F-010-) some of which are pre-weathered at the Factory.
