HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SCRATCH BUILD A MODEL?đ¤ This is a question I am always asked by those who know what I do as a hobby/past-time. There is no set answer to that as the length of time taken to construct a "model" is dependant upon many things. Firstly, how big is the model going to be, how detailed is it going to be, will it be constructed from Plasticard or card, and roughly, how many separately cut pieces it might require to construct it - most of the "largerâ models are constructed in separate parts for ease of the build process. Secondly, all of my "buildsâ are stretched over a period of time - for example, the "concrete bridgeâ was spread over 21 days! The smaller the build the quicker it will be built? Not necessarily, I have constructed many "smallâ models and in some cases, they have taken a lot longer than a large build. The viaduct (7 arches) took less time than a "goods shed" I constructed - why? the viaduct was 90% straight cuts (after the arches were cut) and was constructed in three separate parts, the goods shed was a lot more detailed ( detailed interior, LEDâs fitted, detailed roof interior etc) so smaller parts take more time to cut. It is surprising the number of separate pieces that have to be cut to construct a model - the bridge which I have just completed has around 45 - 50 separately cut pieces! I can only work on scratch-building in any spare time I have and I reckon that it took around 8 hours to construct the bridge which I have just completed? As I am "betweenâ scratch-builds at the moment (last one completed, next one not started!) I have a little time to "ramble on" a bit!!đ
