The passing loop at Craigdurchie is rather short. So longer trains have to be shunted onto one of two headshunts. The rule is that the shorter train is held outside the station while the long train is manoeuvred to the headshunt. Then the short train is admitted, so the two can pass. Very long trains are shunted up the Trochanter into Distillery Tunnel (75 metres). Passenger trains are quite short (no more than 4 bogies carriages) and can use the loop as normal. Stovies on the limied stop passes Tatties on the timber working.
