Modeller’s Inspiration No. 145. Signal box interiors. There has always been an interest in railway signal boxes - their style, size & type, all contributing to the fascination, but what about their interiors? In more recent times of course, a lot of the older style signal boxes have been decommissioned or removed as their purpose has been cascaded up to Railway Operation Centres (ROC) which have a significant larger sphere of operation. ‘Back in the day’, the ‘Box would have been a key piece of infrastructure to ensure the safe passage of traffic. All the dials, buttons, bells, lever frame, map & even tokens enabled this to happen. To see this kind of set up today, this can be seen at a number of preserved railways & I would certainly recommend this if you get the opportunity. Even the interlocking under the signal box is impressive to see. For modeller’s, Peco provide their signal boxes interior kit (Reference item No. 553) & once painted up provides a great representation.
