#postit #c What is there in Chandwell that starts with a “C”…? Ah yes, the River Chander. It meanders alongside the Five Mills Path and eventually cascades over Roberts Weir, which was built in the 19th century by local philanthropist, Simon Roberts, as a spiteful prank against his fishing-loving brother. After babbling over the rocks under Chandwell Old Bridge, the Chander eventually joins the Wharfe near Pool in Wharfedale, some 13 miles distant. Locally nicknamed “The Chunder” by the lovely residents of the town, a common rite of passage for teenagers drinking Lemon Hooch in the Weir pub, is to drink until you “Chunder in the Chander”.
